Hua Hin’s first car boot sale is set to commence on the 3rd November 2013. It’s been a long time coming and unfortunately this years high rainfall has hampered its introduction but the weather is improving and things are looking good for a great start to what will hopefully be a regular occurrence in Hua Hin.
Although car boot sales are not something that is normally associated with Thailand, they are making in-roads throughout the country especially in Bangkok. Hua Hins own car boot sale is set to take place on the first Sunday of each month.
What is a Car Boot Sale?
To the uninitiated it should be pointed out that car boot sales do not in fact sell car boots (or trunks as our American cousins refer to them) just as flea markets do not sell fleas. But they are a great place to go if you want to sell some of your old (but still working) and no longer needed home items such as clothing, electrical items and general nic-nacs. Hua Hin has a very fluid population with people constantly coming, going and moving home which makes it the perfect town in which to hold car boot sales.
Where is it Being Held?
The Hua Hin Car Boot Sale is to be held at an area of land adjacent to and owned by the Zab Wer Restaurant on Soi 112.
A Non Profit Organisation
The purpose of the car boot sales is not to make money for the sale organisers but purely as a way for locals to sell some of their unwanted items in an eco-friendly way, keeping them within the community while at the same time providing other locals the opportunity to pick up a bargain.
Who Can Sell?
Unfortunately, Thailand has plenty of laws and regulations concerning working in the country, especially if you are a foreigner, and while selling a few of your personal belongings may seem petty enough (and not unlike selling things in the classified ads) there is a good chance that some labour laws are going to be infringed if you are not of Thai nationality.
As most visitors from overseas, and even those that call Thailand home, are unlikely to possess a work permit the organisers have set some rules governing who can and cannot sell. Although more details are available on their website the one of the main obligations is that only Thai nationals are allowed to sell goods. So if you are from outside lands, just grab one of your Thai friends to offload your goods for you.
Reserve your Place
If you’re a seller then you can save yourself a little money by making an advance reservation prior to the sale day. Advance booking fee per space is 300 baht, while paying on the day costs 500 baht per space. If you have a large vehicle (over 2.5m wide or 6m long) then you will need to pay for extra space accordingly.
